about AMPPEZ -by Antony Lazarus: Japanese indies band site English site owner - I have become well-versed in the underground music scene via Audrey at BENTEN Label Japan. My introduction to the Japanese scene, and in particular the female rock bands there, was, like so many, through the japanese girl band Shonen Knife. Having collected everything they ever released I was put on to BENTEN through a Shonen Knife forum, with recommendations of other Japanese girl bands like Mummy the Peepshow, Flamenco a Go Go, Droop, etc. Well, once I discovered BENTEN, it was all over for me: I started collecting cd's like crazy. It was in this time that I heard a 1-minute sample from a new band (or at least one I'd never heard of) called AMPPEZ. I was blown away. They were the most unique-sounding, powerhouse of beautiful noise I had heard yet! I emailed Audrey straight away asking for more more more of AMPPEZ! Audrey told me they were about to release a demo CD through BENTEN, so I pre-ordered it immediately. The cd was called "You Are Living It's My All", and it was, and remains to be, one of the best CDs I ever obtained from BENTEN. I started emailing Marie, guitarist, lead vocal and songwriter of AMPPEZ, and soon after made my way to Japan to check them out. To tell you the truth, their live show totally blew me away. They played one of my favourite tracks from the demo for me ("Fuck This World"). Coincidentally, AMPPEZ was on tour with another band I had never heard of called RED BACTERIA VACUUM, and they were awesome as well. Well, from then I became a die-hard groupie of both bands, followed them around on the rest of their tour, and checked out every other live show each band played from then on. On every trip back to Japan since (and there have been several) I make a point to see both bands. We have become friends and shared many "uchiage" (after-show party) together. Going to their shows has opened the doors on many other great bands. I have seen both AMPPEZ and RBV mature musically, and their live shows have improved alot over the time I've known them. I would recommend all their releases, in particular AMPPEZ's "Frankly Speaking About Love", which has a few reworked tracks from the demo, plus other fantastic personal favourites like "Sharbert", "Hello Hello" and "River". I look forward to their 2nd CD "BABY" (with "Michelle" which I've heard live) and the new live CD too! Thank god for BENTEN and thank god for AMPPEZ! AMPPEZ gig report Jam Jam Jam, Shimizu, Shizuoka (2004.5.1) ~AmpPez, LifeBait, Smug Gears and Sex Machine: In Shimizu, found Jam Jam Jam, no trouble with the map I had. Marie-sama and Juri-san from AmpPez were out the front. It was good to see them again. One of the bands had cancelled so only 4 bands were playing. The first band, Smug Gears, were pretty good. Amp Pez played next and this time I didn't stand right up front and get blasted from the speakers, so I actually heard the songs better. They played all new songs from the album (which they gave me a copy of, finally), good stuff. The next band was Sex Machine. They were okay but they talked too much! It was all japanese to me, but I guess it was funny cos people were laughing, but to me it was like just get onto the music already dammit! LifeBait played last and they were really great. It helped actually knowing the songs from the cd I got last time. I will see them again on May 5 with Red Bacteria Vacuum. Looking forward to that.
